Forget the Either/Or: How Professional Branding Combines Personal & Corporate Strengths

QCard is a professional branding platform. You may not have heard that term before, so let us explain what we’re talking about.

Let’s start with the type of branding we normally encounter in our day-to-day lives.

Think about Coke, Nike, Starbucks, or Netflix - they have distinct images, colors, and even fonts that immediately remind you of their company name when you see it.

That is their  Corporate branding.

Corporate branding is how companies or businesses present themselves as a whole. They typically have a mission, vision and values that they adhere to that differentiates them from competitor brands in their field.

Toyota, for example, has a specific image they maintain that distinguishes them from Hyundai, Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, etc. That branding is at the heart of how they present their products and services, including their website, business profiles, and other marketing and promotional materials.

Then we have  Personal branding.

Personal branding is a concept that has been much discussed in recent years as described in bestselling books such as “Personal Branding for Dummies”.

It has to do with the specific image that people present throughout their career. It showcases their individual, overall experience in the field they’re in, across companies and businesses they’ve worked with. For instance, a real estate agent or plumber may have worked for different agencies or companies. They’d want to highlight key achievements with different clients at different points in your career, to showcase their value and ability to prospective clients.

We can summarize all these points in an excerpt from the book:

“Distinguishing yourself from the competition is important in any facet of business, and the rise of personal branding has evolved specifically to help candidates stand out from the global talent pool. Establishing a professional presence with a clear and concise image, reputation, and status is a must, whether you're a new grad or an accomplished executive. Personal marketing has never been more important, and your personal brand should communicate the best you have to offer.”

So where does professional branding come in? It’s a mix of both – each of your team members act as a representative of the company and your brand, while highlighting the qualities you possess that make you uniquely qualified to provide the services you offer in your position.

Needless to say, you need to think about your employees’ professional branding especially when your employee is the product.

They’re not just a lawyer, realtor, or insurance agent providing five-star service to clients. They’re the go-to person at your company for the specific niche your business is in.

So what goes into a professional profile? It combines elements of an employee’s personal branding and your company’s corporate brand, yes, but specifically, it should include:

  • The name of your company
  • The employee’s role at said company
  • Their story, AKA how they ended up in your industry
  • Their credentials, i.e. awards, badges, and other tokens of recognition
  • Specific value proposition – why should clients do business with this team member, specifically, at your company?
  • Content that showcases their unique point of view and insights in the industry, e.g. articles you’ve written, speaking engagements, podcast appearances, etc.

Where your personal branding is usually focused on finding a job (i.e. LinkedIn), corporate branding is geared towards getting the trust and buy-in from potential clients. Professional branding, in turn, is how employees market themselves as the individual that customers should go to at your company for their needs.

The QCard platform offers a modern, branded online profile that showcases your team’s professional branding, allowing them to highlight key achievements in their career and experience, positioning themselves as uniquely qualified to provide that service.
